TheBlindGuide.com – Discovering Passion

by Edward Henkler on June 23, 2015

TheBlindGuide.com will improve quality of life and employability of people who are blind.

More than two years ago, I wrote my first post introducing Henkler High Performance Strategies (HHPS) to the world. As I stated then, I’ve worked in a variety of industries, starting with ten years of service in the nuclear power Navy, then extensive experience in large cap biopharma.  In recent years, I have focused my energy on business coaching, start-up support, and assisting individuals in transition. I have also come to realize that my personal passion is to improve quality of life and employability of people who are blind or visually-impaired.

Uncovering this passion was a journey of discovery that I would recommend for anyone who can’t answer the following questions:

  • Is your work your passion?
  • If not, why not?
  • What’s your dream?

The genesis of my passion was my Mom’s loss of sight many, many years ago but it wasn’t until an unplanned early retirement that I eventually was able to answer the questions above. Even then, I doubt that I would have been able to identify the passion. It took friends and family to observe the way “I came alive” when talking about prevention of blindness and enabling technology for people with compromised vision. At that point, I realized that I would be happiest helping people coping with vision loss.

TheBlindGuide is for anyone coping with vision loss

HHPS will continue although I will be focusing my near term attention on launching The Blind Guide. I have several goals with my new site, mixing my passion and a desire to help others in the spirit of the B-Corps. If you’re not familiar with the B-Corps principles, some excerpts from Ryan Honeyman’s book, The B-Corp Handbook, should help:

  • African proverb: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go further, go together”.
  • Philosophy: B-Corp companies want to be the best <for>, not just, <in> the world.
  • Goal: Move from shareholders to stakeholders (workers, suppliers, community, environment, shareholders).
  • Core Value: We stand <for> something not <against> anything.

You can read more about my plans here.

Welcome to the next step in my journey. With your help, we can make the world more accessible to people experiencing vision loss and put a huge dent in that 70% unemployment stat associated with people who are blind or visually-impaired.
